This past June Raymond Gindroz, FAIA, (B.Arch ’63, M.Arch ’65), principal emeritus at Urban Design Associates, was honored as the 2018 recipient of the Peter G. Decker Jr. Downtowner of the Year award during the Downtown Norfolk, Virginia Council’s annual meeting. This theme of this year’s awards program, Success by Design, is a nod to Gindroz and his design work for the city’s renaissance dating back to the mid-1980s.
Gindroz, who also serves as an urban design consultant to Work Program Architects, helped to develop the Pattern Book for the redevelopment and revitalization of downtown Norfolk and campaigned for street-friendly facades on notable properties in the city. A past chair of the Congress for the New Urbanism, Gindroz has served on a variety of boards, taught specialized courses at universities and foundations, and wrote two textbooks on urban design.
Since 1990, the Downtowner of the Year award has been bestowed upon an individual or organizations that have made a substantial contribution to Downtown Norfolk’s growth and vitality through economic and cultural development.
