Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Fine Arts (CFA) will celebrate its students’ work during the Winter Celebration weekend, beginning Friday 06 December.
School of Architecture
As part of the School of Architecture’s Fall 2019 Final Reviews, students in First Year Studio will review their semester-long designs for Critical Cyborg, a project for which students developed creature colonies for Silo City in Buffalo. The Critical Cyborg Review will take place Friday 06 December from 1:00–7:30pm in the College of Fine Arts building, room 214.
School of Art
This year, Carnegie Mellon’s School of Art welcomes you to their annual OPEN STUDIOS, “Bourgeoi-Z: Let them eat art.” This community-wide art party will feature undergraduate performance, video, animation, sculpture, and 2D + multimedia artworks. This event is ONE NIGHT ONLY, so bring a friend, eat some art, enjoy some music, and don’t forget your wallets because students will be selling some of their work during the event on Friday 06 December from 6:00-9:00pm in the 4th floor studios of the College of Fine Arts building.
School of Design
All this week and next, the School of Design will be celebrating students’ work. During Design Week, undergraduate and graduate students display and celebrate the work they produced over the past semester, starting Monday 02 December at 8:00am and concluding Friday 13 December at 6:00pm.
In addition to Design Week, senior Design students will share their most recent accomplishments in their exhibition “Final_FINAL_v36 copy.show” at the Miller Institute for Contemporary Art. The work featured in the show offers insight into the culmination of four years of study, pushing the boundaries of medium and method in the field of design. The reception is Friday 06 December from 6:00-8:00pm, and the exhibition will be free and open to the public Saturday 07 December through Sunday 15 December.
School of Music
This year the School of Music celebrates its students and the season with their annual performance by Carnegie Mellon’s Philharmonic and Chorus, conducted by Andrés Cárdenes. This year’s repertoire features selections from Handel’s The Messiah. The concert is free and open to the public on Friday 06 December from 12:00-1:00pm in the Great Hall of the College of Fine Arts building.
BXA Intercollege Degree Programs
As part of the School of Art’s OPEN STUDIOS, the BXA first-year seminar invites you to their class exhibition, “Remixing the Wunderkammer.” This show explores topics such as context, representation across media, remix and adaptation, ideology / ideologies, dream logic and reality, aesthetic vocabularies, collections and curation, intellectual property, and the instability of meaning. The exhibited works are the culmination of a semester spent thinking about the interdisciplinary nature of creative and scholarly life, and will be on display Friday 06 December from 5:00–6:30pm in the College of Fine Arts building, room 303.
Getting to the events: Public transit is readily accessible to CMU’s campus. Free parking is also available in the East Campus Garage after 5:00pm or on Frew, Margaret Morrison, and Tech Streets after 6:00pm.
