Adjunct faculty member Andrew Moss, owner and principal of mossArchitects, was recently featured in Dwell Magazine for his firm’s distinguished work on the adaptive reuse project The Detective Building in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood. The 1970s-era structure formerly housed the investigative branch of Pittsburgh's Police Bureau. The first floor is now home to the newest retail space for Schoolhouse, a vintage lighting and homeware company. The building’s upstairs houses Beauty Shoppe, a co-working space founded by SoA alumnus Matthew Ciccone.
mossArchitects worked with Schoolhouse CEO Brian Faherty to refurbish the New Formalist structure, which he first came across in 2015. The Schoolhouse brand’s mission of reuse aligns with mossArchitects’ approach of mixing new with vintage to restore the building.
Preserving the building’s integrity, mossArchitects updated the structure’s look, and took measures to maintain details such as original tile work. Schoolhouse also preserved original tanker desks and infused the space with their own lighting and furniture.
