The School of Architecture’s 2019-20 Ann Kalla Co-Professors in Architecture, Nathalie Frankowski and Cruz García, to speak on Monday 07 October as part of the 2019 Fall Lecture Series.

Their talk, “In Post-Novis all the Students are the teacher” discusses a decade of alternative projects as historical reflex in a time of pressing global challenges.

A variety of examples are summoned to question historical narratives from positions of power while searching for kynical, emancipating, and critical forms of architecture.

IN POST-NOVIS ALL THE STUDENTS ARE THE TEACHER On the Centenary of the now-legendary Bauhaus and the parallel, lesser-known UNOVIS, WAI Architecture Think Tank discusses a decade of alternative projects as historical reflex in a time of pressing global challenges. Buildings, publications, exhibitions, installations, films, manifestoes, intellectual provocations, curatorial programs, and pedagogical experiments are summoned to question historical narratives from positions of power while searching for kynical, emancipating, and critical forms of architecture.

NATHALIE FRANKOWSKI + CRUZ GARCIA are co-founding directors of WAI Architecture Think Tank, an international studio practicing architecture from a panoramic approach, the art collective García Frankowski, and founding curators of Beijing-based experimental art and discourse laboratory Intelligentsia Gallery. Educators searching for critical pedagogies, Frankowski and García hold the current Ann Kalla Professorship in Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University, and are former Hyde Chairs of Excellence in Architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Visiting Teaching Fellows at The School of Architecture at Taliesin. Working with diverse media, projects include the shortlisted design for the National Centre for Contemporary Art in Moscow and the installation Post-Colonial Room, the English and Chinese editions of the book Pure Hardcore Icons: A Manifesto on Pure Form in Architecture, the forthcoming book Narrative Architecture: A Kynical Manifesto, as well as exhibitions at the Inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial; MoMA NY; the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon; KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin; and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein.

WAI ARCHITECTURE THINK TANK is an international studio practicing architecture, urbanism, and architectural research. WAI is a workshop for architecture intelligentsia. WAI asks What About It?
