Thanks to all of the family and friends who joined us this past weekend to celebrate our graduating students during the 2019 School of Architecture Diploma Ceremony & Reception on Saturday, 18 May 2019. Congratulations to the class of 2019!

This year’s ceremony featured remarks from our special guest Rana Sen, MSCD ’99, recipient of the 2019 CMU Alumni Service Award. Our undergraduate speaker duo of Zane Birenbaum and Zain Islam-Hashmi reflected on their time with the school, and helped us surprise SoA head Steve Lee with an impromptu rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Our graduate student speaker was Asli Selay Darga Ozutemiz, graduating from the Master of Science in Architecture—Engineering—Construction Management program. This year also marked the first graduating class of our Master of Architecture students since re-introducing the program in 2017.
Each year the SoA also honors undergraduate students with our three Commencement Awards. Kelly Li received the Alpha Rho Chi Medal in recognition of her service and leadership to the school. Gunn Chaiyapatranun received both the Henry Adams AIA Medal as the top-ranked graduating B.Arch student, as well as the John Knox Shear Memorial Traveling Award for demonstrating exceptional design in the last two years of the program.
For the second consecutive year, the SoA Fifth Year Show was on display during the diploma ceremony reception. The exhibition showcases and celebrates the cumulative work of the graduating class of students.
Our students were also featured during Carnegie Mellon University’s main Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, 19 May 2019. Architecture student Hamza Qureshi, BA ’19 was this year’s student speaker. CMU also featured the stories of Nikhita Bhagwat, M.Arch ’19 and Zain Islam-Hashmi, B.Arch ’19 in the days leading up to Commencement Weekend and during the first ever Commencement Preshow.
