Announcing the 2022 SoA Awards Program: Applications due Tue 15 Mar

The School of Architecture is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2022 SoA Awards Program. Awards are available to Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty, for over $75,000 in total funds available. More information about the awards and links to the applications are available on the SoA Awards page.

Undergraduate Student Awards

Burdett Assistantship
B.Arch Student Award
Open to B.Arch students pursuing their first professional degree in architecture, this scholarship is intended to support projects and activities that will enhance the winning student’s future work. One $4,000 scholarship will be awarded to a B.Arch student.

Alwin Cassens, Jr. Memorial Fund in Architecture
Student Award
This $2,200 award provides financial support to School of Architecture students to attend conferences or other events in support of their academic pursuits in the area of public interest design. One award will be awarded to either an undergraduate or graduate student each year.

Deller Prize in Sustainable Architecture and Real Estate
B.Arch Student Award
This $4,500 award encourages architecture students to pursue non-traditional career paths, specifically to grow their skills in the specialty of design, construction, and sustainability under the umbrella of the real estate business. Fourth-year B.Arch students in good standing that meet the requirements will be invited directly to apply.

Ferguson Jacobs Prize in Architecture
Student Award
This $5,000 award was established to promote continuity of the classical tradition in contemporary architectural practice. It encourages design excellence based on long-standing design principles that promote beauty and harmony in the built environment. One award will be awarded each year. 

Fourth-Year Design Awards
B.Arch Student Awards
All fourth-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) students are invited to apply to the Fourth-Year Design Awards, which include the Luther S. Lashmit ($5,000) and Louis F. Valentour Traveling Scholarships ($9,000), the Ralph H. Burt Jr. and Alva L. Hill Scholarship ($2,200), the John Knox Shear Award ($10,000), and the Stewart L. Brown Memorial Scholarship ($9,000).

Gindroz Prize for Summer Travel and Study in Europe
Student Award
The Gindroz Prize for Summer Travel and Study in Europe was established to enrich lives and enhance education through travel and the study of traditional architecture, urbanism, and music in Europe. Undergraduate students in the second- or third-year of a four-year program or in the third- or fourth-year of a five-year program, and master’s degree graduate students in their first year are eligible to apply. Please note: applications for this award are due on Tuesday, 01 February 2022 at 11:59pm ET.

David Lewis Community Engagement Design Scholarship
Student Award
This $2,500 award provides financial support to students who demonstrate a commitment to working within diverse communities through participatory architectural design processes and who demonstrate commitments to social justice and community service. One award will be awarded to either an undergraduate or graduate student each year.

Measuring & Monitoring Services, Inc. Internship Fund
Undergraduate Student Award
This $3,200 award provides financial support to undergraduate students who wish to undertake a summer internship or related program under the guidance of established professionals during the summer preceding their final year of undergraduate study. One award will be awarded to either a third year B.A. or fourth year B.Arch student.

Payette Prize in Building Science
B.Arch Student Award
This $4,500 award recognizes the accomplishments of a B.Arch student that has achieved exceptional performance by integrating the fundamentals of building science in their design work. Fourth-year B.Arch students in good standing that meet the requirements will be invited directly to apply.


Graduate Student Awards

George W. Anderson, Jr. Award
Graduate Student Award
This award recognizes graduate students who demonstrate through their work an exceptional level of attention to detail or dedication to beneficially impacting the community. Up to four awards may be awarded, including one $2,500 award and three $1,500 awards.

M.Arch Student Award
This award provides financial support to M.Arch students pursuing their first professional degree in architecture whose work focuses on sustainable environments, performance-based design, and systems integration throughout the design process. One $2,200 scholarship will be awarded to a M.Arch student.
