Fall 2023 Architecture Awards: Applications due Wed 01 Nov

Carnegie Mellon Architecture is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the Fall 2023 Awards. Applications are due on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 11:59pm ET.

Over $60,000 in funding is available to support travel, projects, internships and research for undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty. Awards also recognize student work in sustainable design. More information, and links to the applications, are available on the Awards page.

Project/Internship Support

Burdett Assistantship
B.Arch & M.Arch Student Award
This award is open to all Carnegie Mellon Architecture students pursuing their first professional degree in architecture and is intended to support projects and activities that will enhance the winning student’s future work.

  • Fall 2023 Jury: Matthew Huber (Chair), Vicki Achnani, Nina Baird, Jongwan Kwon

  • Fall 2023 Award Amount: $4,000 each (two (2) available for B.Arch and one (1) available for M.Arch)

Alwin Cassens, Jr. Memorial Fund in Architecture
Student Award
This award provides financial support to Carnegie Mellon Architecture students to attend conferences or other events in support of their academic pursuits in the area of public interest design.

  • Fall 2023 Award Amount: $2,200 each (two (2) available)

Measuring & Monitoring Services, Inc. Internship Fund
Undergraduate Student Award
This award provides financial support to undergraduate students who wish to undertake a summer internship or related program under the guidance of established professionals during the summer preceding their final year of undergraduate study. One (1) award will be awarded to either a third year B.A. or fourth year B.Arch student.

Sustainable Design Award

Ralph H. Burt Jr. and Alva L. Hill Scholarship
B.Arch & M.Arch Student Award
This award provides financial support to students pursuing their first professional degree in architecture whose work focuses on sustainable environments, performance-based design and systems integration throughout the design process. All fourth-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) students and all first- and second-year Master of Architecture (M.Arch) students pursuing their first professional degree in architecture are eligible to apply.

  • Fall 2023 Award Amount: $2,200 each (one (1) available for B.Arch and one (1) available for M.Arch)

Travel Awards

Gindroz Prize for Summer Travel and Study in Europe
Student Award
This award was established to enrich lives and enhance education through travel and the study of traditional architecture, urbanism and music in Europe. Students in the second or third year of a four year undergraduate program, in the third or fourth year of a five year undergraduate program, and master’s degree graduate students in their first year are eligible to apply.

  • Fall 2023 Jury: Joshua Lee (Chair), Doug Cooper, Jackie McFarland, Francesca Torello

  • Fall 2023 Award Amount: Proposals of up to $10,000 will be accepted.
    Note: The school will fund the proposed amount up to $10,000. For example, if the proposal is for $6,500 then that amount will be awarded. If the proposed amount is over $10,000, then only $10,000 would be awarded.

Luther S. Lashmit and Louis F. Valentour Traveling Scholarships
Student Awards
These awards support international travel and research under the guidance of a faculty advisor for students with one or more years remaining in their degree program.

  • Fall 2023 Award Amount: $6,500 (three (3) available)

Ferguson Jacobs Prize in Architecture
Student Award
This award was established to promote the continuity of traditional architecture and building techniques in contemporary architectural practice. The prize supports projects, travel experiences or individual apprenticeships and internships that explore traditional architecture and building techniques as vital knowledge to an architect’s education, practice and scholarship.

Research Award

Isabel Sophia Liceaga Discretionary Fund
Faculty Award
This award was established to support faculty-led projects that critically engage students and advance the mission and reputation of the school.
