Fourth-year student Kirk Newton (B.Arch 2017) has won this year's John Knox Shear Memorial Traveling Scholarship, Head of School Steve Lee announced in early April. Assistant Head Mary-Lou Arscott commented specifically on the visual cogency and beauty of Kirk's award submission (a retrospective of his work as an architecture student). In addition, Arscott said, his design and written work "move beyond the prosaic to critically explore meaning. Kirk embraces his education in an extraordinary way, approaching the work with an explicit interest in critiquing the project itself, as well as his own design."
John Knox Shear graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT) and served as both Professor of Architecture and Head of the Architecture Department from 1949 until 1955. Following his untimely death in 1958, department members, graduates and friends established a memorial scholarship to commemorate Professor Shear's distinguished contributions to architecture and architecture education, and to benefit future architecture students at CIT, now Carnegie Mellon University.
Kirk Newton plans to use the prestigious $10,000 scholarship to support travel to both Copenhagen and Hong Kong.
