Announcing the Fall 2022 SoA Awards: Applications due Tue 01 Nov

The School of Architecture is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the Fall 2022 SoA Awards. The application period for the SoA awards is now being split between the fall and spring semesters. Applications for the awards listed below are due on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at 11:59pm ET. The call for applications for all other SoA awards will be announced later this year, with applications due in spring 2023.

Awards are available to Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty. Awards support projects, internships, travel, and research, and recognize student work in sustainable design.

Project/Internship Support

Burdett Assistantship
B.Arch & M.Arch Student Award
Open to all School of Architecture students pursuing their first professional degree in architecture, this award is intended to support projects and activities that will enhance the winning student’s future work.

  • Fall 2022 Jury: Hal Hayes (Chair), Omar Khan, Eddy Man Kim, Valentina Vavasis

  • Award Amount: $4,000 each (two (2) available for B.Arch and one (1) available for M.Arch)

Alwin Cassens, Jr. Memorial Fund in Architecture
Student Award
This award provides financial support to School of Architecture students to attend conferences or other events in support of their academic pursuits in the area of public interest design.

  • Fall 2022 Jury: Mary-Lou Arscott (Chair), Josh Bard, Kai Gutschow, Erica Cochran Hameen

  • Award Amount: $2,200 each (two (2) available)

Measuring & Monitoring Services, Inc. Internship Fund
Undergraduate Student Award
This award provides financial support to undergraduate students who wish to undertake a summer internship or related program under the guidance of established professionals during the summer preceding their final year of undergraduate study. One award will be awarded to either a third year B.A. or fourth year B.Arch student.

  • Award Amount: $3,200 (one (1) available)

Sustainable Design Award

Ralph H. Burt Jr. and Alva L. Hill Scholarship
B.Arch Student Award
All fourth-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) students are invited to apply to the Ralph H. Burt Jr. and Alva L. Hill Scholarship, part of the Fourth-Year Design Awards. Preference is given to students whose work focuses on sustainable environments, performance-based design, and systems integration throughout the design process in alignment with the legacy of the work of Burt Hill.

  • Fall 2022 Jury (B.Arch): Eddy Man Kim (Chair), Zaid Alghata, Nina Baird, Jeremy Ficca

  • Award Amount: $2,200 (one (1) available for B.Arch)

Ralph H. Burt Jr. and Alva L. Hill Scholarship
M.Arch Student Award
This award provides financial support to M.Arch students pursuing their first professional degree in architecture whose work focuses on sustainable environments, performance-based design, and systems integration throughout the design process.

  • Fall 2022 Jury (M.Arch): Sarosh Anklesaria (Chair), Priyanka Bista, Matthew Huber, Jonathan Kline

  • Award Amount: $2,200 (one (1) available for M.Arch)

Travel Awards

Gindroz Prize for Summer Travel and Study in Europe
Student Award
The Gindroz Prize for Summer Travel and Study in Europe was established to enrich lives and enhance education through travel and the study of traditional architecture, urbanism, and music in Europe. Students in the second or third year of a four-year undergraduate program, in the third or fourth year of a five-year undergraduate program, and master’s degree graduate students in their first year are eligible to apply.

  • Fall 2022 Jury: Omar Khan (Head, School of Architecture), Jonathan Bailey Holland (Head, School of Music)

  • Award Amount: Proposals of up to $10,000 will be accepted. Note: The school will fund the proposed amount up to $10,000. For example, if the proposal is for $6,500 then that amount will be awarded. If the proposed amount is over $10,000, then only $10,000 would be awarded.

Luther S. Lashmit and Louis F. Valentour Traveling Scholarships
B.Arch Student Awards
All fourth-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) students are invited to apply to the Luther S. Lashmit and Louis F. Valentour Traveling Scholarships, part of the Fourth-Year Design Awards. These awards recognize design excellence and support international travel and research. The recipient prepares a travel or research proposal under the guidance of a faculty advisor.

  • Fall 2022 Jury: Jeremy Ficca (Chair), Heather Bizon, Gerard Damiani, Tommy Yang

  • Award Amount: $6,500 (three (3) available)

Research Awards

Ferguson Jacobs Prize in Architecture
Faculty Award
This award was established to promote continuity of the classical tradition in contemporary architectural practice. It encourages design excellence based on long-standing design principles that promote beauty and harmony in the built environment.

  • Award Amount: $6,500 (one (1) available)

Isabel Sophia Liceaga Discretionary Fund
Faculty Award
This award was established to support faculty-led projects that critically engage students and advance the mission and reputation of the school.
