Since SO-IL’s conception, the firm has committed itself in envisioning spaces for culture through the production of buildings, interiors, furniture and landscapes around the world. Culture is very good at pointing to things and calling their name, but not so good at describing the interactivity or chemistry between things or the repertoires they enact. On the flip side of some dominant logics that give authority to declarations, solutions, or master plans, medium design alter dispositions or the matrix of activities in organization as well as the stories and spin that make those changes contagious. Applying a design imagination in these forms of interplay offers special aesthetic pleasures and political capacities that access some underexploited powers in both digital and spatial information systems.

Hans Vetter Memorial Lecture
The increasing deployment of sensors and hand-held electronics in recent years is allowing a new approach to the study of the built environment. The way we describe and understand cities is being radically transformed - alongside the tools we use to design them and impact on their physical structure. The contribution from Prof Carlo Ratti will address these issues from a critical point of view through projects by the Senseable City Laboratory, a research initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the design office Carlo Ratti Associati.
David Lewis, Urban Design Associates: Communities by Design

Professor Lewis came to the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now CMU) in 1963 as the Andrew Mellon Professor of Architecture and Urban Design where he started one of the first graduate programs in urban design in which students learned to work hands-on with elected officials, agency representatives, and citizens on community design and development projects. Professor Lewis will discuss his concerns and hopes for the future of urban design education.
Trey Trahan, Trahan Architects: Fragmenting Ecologies

Trey spends his time between New Orleans, New York, and Patagonia Chile, where he recently purchased and is in the process of conserving a property in the Corcovado National Park, one of the eleven national parks established by North Face founder Douglas Tompkins. He is working to return this property to its pristine natural state, while enjoying his time in this remote landscape. Fragmenting Ecologies investigates increasing species through fragmentation of ecologies.
