Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture Head Steve Lee announces the winners during the 2017 Faculty & Student Awards ceremony.
On Monday, 10 April 2017 the Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture presented its annual Faculty & Student Awards during a ceremony held in the Kresge Theatre. Please join us in congratulating the following winners on their tremendous accomplishments, and thank you to all of those who submitted entries in this year's competition.
Spring 2017 Student Awards
Alwin Cassens, Jr. Memorial Prize in Architectural History | $2200 prize
Winner: Sinan Goral
Travel destinations: Arizona, California
Alwin Cassens, Jr., a 1934 graduate of CIT, was an architect specializing in single-family, mid-century modern houses. In addition to running an architectural practice from his Long Island offices, Cassens also published his designs in a collection of pattern books allowing distant clients to purchase blueprints for his houses. He won several honors over the course of his career. The Alwin Cassens, Jr. Memorial Prize honors his participation in shaping the housing landscape of mid-century America, as an indication of social, cultural, and/or aesthetic expression.
Measuring & Monitoring Services, Inc. Internship Fund, established through the generosity of James Halpern (BAC '81) | $3000 prize
Winner: Ivy Monroe
Internship: Island Design Assembly
The M&MSI Internship Fund provides $3000 of financial support to a School of Architecture undergraduate student who wishes to undertake a summer internship or related program, under the guidance of established professionals. The internship fund recognizes the importance and advantage of being immersed for an extended period in the creative processes and organizational dynamics of an architecture firm, non-government organization, non-profit organization or CMU faculty member. Funds are not to be used to compensate for unpaid internships.

Margaret B. Gruger (A’41) Faculty Fund | $5000 prize each
Winners: Stefan Gruber, Project title: An Atlas of Commoning; Dana Cupkova + Daragh Byrne, Project title: Mind Controlling Sentience
The Margaret B. Gruger Faculty Fund has been established to support the needs of the School of Architecture and its faculty. To that end, the Head of the School is soliciting project proposals from the faculty that advance the mission and reputation of the School. Upon completion of the project, the recipients of funding will be required to make a public presentation of their work to the School community.
Isabel Sophia Liceaga Discretionary Fund | $2000 prize
Winner: Daniel Cardoso Llach
Project: Exhibition at the Miller Gallery Fall 2017
The Isabel Sophia Liceaga Discretionary Fund has been established to support the highest priority needs of the School of Architecture and its constituents. The Head of the School solicited project proposals from the faculty that advance the mission and reputation of the School. A strong emphasis was placed upon projects that critically engage our students. The recipients of funding will be required to make a public presentation of their work to the School community.
Ferguson Jacobs Prize in Architecture | $5000 prize
Winner: Matt Huber
Project title: Type Specimen
The Ferguson Jacobs Prize has been established to promote the continuity of tradition in contemporary architectural practice. It encourages design excellence based on long-standing design principles that promote beauty and harmony in the built environment. Endowed by Mark Ferguson, A’78 and Natalie Jacobs, A’79, this prize of $5000 is available to students and faculty on alternating years in the School of Architecture. The prize supports projects that contribute to an architect’s education, practice and scholarship.
