RCI’s Research on Resilient Industrial Regions Contributes to Transatlantic Dialogue

The Remaking Cities Institute’s research and programming on resilient industrial regions is continuing to contribute to a transatlantic dialogue on challenges and opportunities. RCI will be sustaining this dialogue in 2022, including programs with the Ruhr region which will be announced in early 2022.

Don Carter, Senior Research Fellow at the Remaking Cities Institute, will speak at the Engineering and Safety Conference (TESC) at Penn State on Wednesday 11 December. The subject of his talk is “Smart Cities & The Built Environment.” TESC is an annual gathering that brings together professionals from throughout Pennsylvania, the mid-Atlantic region, and the country to discuss pressing issues from some of the foremost experts in transportation today.

Pittsburgh City Planning Director Ray Gastil Taking New Job Opportunity as Director of Remaking Cities Institute

Pittsburgh City Planning Director Ray Gastil has been appointed David Lewis Director of Urban Design and Regional Engagement in the School of Architecture. In this role he will direct the Remaking Cities Institute and teach architecture and urban design. Gastil’s new position begins September 1, 2019.

Don Carter to step down as Director of Remaking Cities Institute, transitions to Adjunct Faculty role

Donald K. Carter, FAIA, FAICP, LEED AP will step down as David Lewis Director of Urban Design and Regional Engagement of the Remaking Cities Institute (RCI). Beginning on July 1, Carter will transition to a new part-time role as an SoA Adjunct Professor in the Master of Urban Design Program, as an RCI Senior Research Fellow, and as an advisor to Campus Design and Facility Development.

SoA faculty Don Carter and Christine Mondor will speak at the 10th Annual Sustainability Conference – “Smart Cities: Transforming Cities for a New Era” in Pittsburgh on March 6. Carter will deliver the keynote, titled “Smart Cities: A Global Perspective.”

CMU Team Finalist in 2017 ULI Hines Student Urban Design Competition

This past week, the team from Carnegie Mellon University presented their work to the Hines Competition Jury in Chicago for the national ULI Gerald Hines Urban Design Competition. The CMU team, four graduate students from the School of Architecture and one from the Tepper School of Business, made it to the Final Four in the competition for the first time in school history.
