John Folan Appointed Professor & Head of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas

After 11 years at the Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture, Professor John Folan has been appointed Professor & Head of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas. Folan previously served as the T. David Fitz-Gibbon Professor of Architecture, founder and director of the Urban Design Build Studio (UDBS), Track Chair of the Masters of Urban Design (MUD) program, and member of the Remaking Cities Institute (RCI).

UDBS to Present as Finalist at Department of Energy 2019 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge

The Urban Design Build Studio (UDBS) will present as a finalist at the Department of Energy’s 2019 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge on Saturday 13 April at 4:30pm EDT in a livestreamed event. The studio is presenting the urban infill housing prototypes RE_CON 01 and RE_CON 02 developed by students that will be constructed in East Liberty.

Urban Design Build Studio Awarded State of Pennsylvania Impact Design Practice Honor during AIA PA 2018 Architectural Excellence Design Awards

The Urban Design Build Studio (UDBS) was awarded the 2018 State of Pennsylvania Impact Design Practice award as well as recognition for the REACH project during last night’s AIA Pennsylvania 2018 Architectural Excellence Design Awards ceremony. Fifth year B.Arch student Timothy Khalifa was also awarded a Student Award during the ceremony.

Public Interest Design Education Guidebook Features Work of UDBS and PROJECT RE_

The recently released Public Interest Design Education Guidebook: Curricula, Strategies, and SEED Academic Case Studies (2018) presents the pedagogical framework and collective curriculum necessary to teach public interest designers and features the work of the UDBS and PROJECT RE_.

UDBS & Quito’s Universidad de las Americas Collaborate on Vertical Gardening Prototypes

Urban Design Build Studio (UDBS) students worked alongside students from the Universidad de las Américas (UDLA) in Quito, Ecuador in November. UDBS students and faculty traveled to Quito during the XX Pan American Bienal de Arquitectura to participate in the La Tolita Workshop, which itself was part of a larger research project and community-based design effort led by UDLA in Guapulo, a neighborhood in Northern Quito.
