Join us for the Environmental Justice and the Built Environment Teach-In on Fri 16 Oct

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture hosts the Environmental Justice and the Built Environment Teach-In on Friday 16 October. This set of conversations, organized by students and faculty, aims to foster learning about how the design and planning of the built environment contributes to environmental harms that specifically concentrate in marginalized Black and brown communities, and the ways in which designers can work with communities to address these structural and localized conditions.

Freedom By Design Chapter Awarded 2020 NOMA-NAACP-SEED Award for Design Excellence in Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The Carnegie Mellon Freedom By Design chapter has been awarded a 2020 NOMA-NAACP-SEED Award for Design Excellence in Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for the Weatherization Kit Project. The project aims to address housing inequalities by providing information and materials to help Pittsburgh families save money and energy in the winter months.

The sixth session of LOUDREADERS on Sat 09 May at 5:00pm EST welcomes three student-run platforms: Carnegie Mellon University’s inter·punct, The School of Architecture at Taliesin WASH Magazine, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Fold, as they exchange questions, strategies, and projections.

LOUDREADERS Online Conversation Series Welcomes Traumnovelle Sat 04 Apr at 4pm EST

LOUDREADERS online conversation series begins Saturday 04 April at 4:00pm EST with Traumnovelle, a militant faction founded by three Belgian architects: Léone Drapeaud, Manuel León Fanjul, and Johnny Leya. Traumnovelle uses architecture and fiction as analytical, critical, and subversive tools to emphasize contemporary issues and dissect their resolutions. 

WAI Launches Online Conversation Series LOUDREADERS

Kalla Co-Professors Nathalie Frankowski and Cruz Garcia launch LOUDREADERS, an online conversation series in collaboration with inter·punct. LOUDREADERS is a cross between podcast, YouTube channel, Zoom meeting, lecture series, digital curatorial program, and online workshop that establishes networks of solidarity around the world while discussing urgent positions, discourses, and media about architecture, urbanism, art, and culture.

School of Architecture B.Arch Fifth-Year Selena Zhen Recognized at 2019 AIAS Honor Awards

The SoA congratulates B.Arch fifth-year Selena Zhen on being awarded the Special Accomplishment Honor Award as part of the 2019 American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) Honor Awards. Each year the AIAS honors individuals and groups for their exemplary work in areas such as leadership, collaboration, scholarship, and service.

CMU Selects Freedom By Design Home Weatherization Kit Project for Annual Crowdfunding Campaign

Freedom by Design’s Weatherization Kits are one of 12 projects featured in the annual CMU Crowdfunding Campaign. Each year, CMU highlights student projects that promote hands-on learning and impact the local community. Donations are being accepted now through December 3, 2019 at 11:59pm EST.

inter•punct Call for Submissions: Pedagogy Zines

inter•punct is putting together a project discussing emergent and often radical issues latent in the educational environment that the organization feels are far too absent from current discourse. Following the footsteps of pamphlet architecture, clip-stamp-fold, and 'a few zines,’ the group is curating a collection of zines, and they invite you to be a part of this process.

SoA Students Construct Official Entryway for CMU Spring Carnival

A group of 50 SoA students started a new tradition by designing and building the official entryway to CMU's Spring Carnival. The effort is led by SoA Pavilion Committee chairs Ghalya Alsanea (B.Arch ’20), Edward Fischer (B.Arch ’21), and Ryu Kondrup (B.Arch ’21).

B.Arch Fifth Year Zain Islam-Hashmi Has Designs for Fashion

As head designer for CMU's annual Lunar Gala fashion show, Zain Islam-Hashmi has created his niche as an architect of fashion, who creates clothing and wardrobe ensembles with materials like resin, cement, and plexiglass. He has taken advantage of opportunities at CMU and around the world and has shaped them into something unique.
