Group Exhibition "Human Scale Remeasured" Features Work of Stefan Gruber’s Spring 2020 Cooperative Housing Studio

Associate Professor Stefan Gruber has initiated an international cooperation between five schools of architecture that investigates Cooperative Housing for the 2000-Watt Society. They explore how to address the intertwined issues of affordable housing and resource scarcity against the backdrop of ecological, economic, and political crisis and design for more equitable, collaborative, and resilient communities. “Human Scale Remeasured” is currently on show at the Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin through 13 May 2021.

Remaking Cities Institute Faculty to Work with Monessen and Shaler on Traffic21 Smart Mobility Challenge Projects

Remaking Cities Institute director Ray Gastil and faculty Jonathan Kline and Stephen Quick will work with the City of Monessen and the Township of Shaler, winners of Traffic21’s third annual Smart Mobility Challenge, to develop mobility/urban design recommendations from computer visualization data to respond to community priorities.

RCI Director Ray Gastil Speaks at “COVID-19: One Year Later" Series on Fri 05 Mar

Remaking Cities Institute director Ray Gastil will speak on "Downtowns: Adaptive Reuse Project of the 2020s" on Friday 05 March at 12:00pm EST. The event is part of the series "COVID-19: One Year Later" organized by the Portland Society for Architecture. The series is intended to speak to larger issues for Portland, Maine, and downtowns like it.

CMU Team Earns Honorable Mention in 2021 ULI Hines Student Competition

A CMU team including SoA students Colleen Duong (B.Arch ‘21), Sean O'Connor (M.Arch ‘21), and Zhecui Zhang (M.Arch ‘21) received Honorable Mention in the 2021 Urban Land Institute (ULI) Hines Student Competition. The team was advised by SoA faculty Valentina Vavasis and Jonathan Kline. Their entry “The KC Knot” envisions Kansas City’s East Village as an area that embraces socioeconomic and racial diversity, encourages sustainable transportation, and supports equitable job growth and innovation.

Daniel Cardoso Llach curates Vers un imaginaire numérique exhibition in Montreal in Fall 2021

Daniel Cardoso Llach is the lead curator of Vers un imaginaire numérique, a new exhibition examining the nexus of architecture, design, and computation in North America. The show will take place in the Centre de design de l’UQAM in Montreal in the fall of 2021, supported by a prestigious $50,000 CAD Connections Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

2021 SoA Awards Program Applications due Tue 30 Mar at 5pm ET

The School of Architecture is now accepting applications for the 2021 SoA Awards Program. Awards are available for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as two faculty awards. More information about the awards and links to the applications are available on the SoA Awards page. Applications are due on Tuesday, 30 March 2021 at 5:00pm EST.

RCI Director Ray Gastil is a Panelist at Georgia Tech’s Symposium "Climate Change and the Design of the Built Environment" Thu 04 Mar

Remaking Cities Institute director Ray Gastil will be on the panel "Design and Equity: The Value of Eliminating Equity Gaps" at the Georgia Institute of Technology symposium Climate Change and the Design of the Built Environment on Thursday, 04 March 2021 at 10:15am ET. The symposium features remote presentations, student-led interviews, and a look inside Georgia Tech's Kendeda Building.

Ömer Akin Remembrance Event is March 13 at 1pm ET

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture invites you to join us on Saturday, 13 March 2021 at 1:00pm ET for a Remembrance of Ömer Akin, Professor Emeritus with the SoA. The event will be hosted on Zoom. Vivian Loftness Receives 2021 ARCC James Haecker Award for Distinguished Leadership in Architectural Research

Professor Vivian Loftness, FAIA was awarded the 2021 ARCC James Haecker Award for Distinguished Leadership in Architectural Research by the Board of Directors of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC). This award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the growth of research in architecture and related fields.

Fall Lecture Series Concludes with Sarosh Anklesaria Mon 16 Nov

The 2020 Fall Lecture and Dialogue Series concludes on Monday 16 November at 7:00pm ET as Sarosh Anklesaria presents “Agency and its Affects.” Anklesaria is an architect and educator, and currently the T. David Fitz-Gibbon professor of architecture at CMU. The lecture unpacks the means and affects of architectural agency across a range of scales and geographies – from architectures implicated in the planetary production of food – to itinerant pavilions for less regarded modernist histories.
