DesignIntelligence Architecture Schools Rating Surveys Now Open, Deadline Extended to Fri 06 Aug

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture invites hiring professionals, current students, and recent graduates to participate in the annual DesignIntelligence Architecture Schools Rating Surveys, open now through 06 August 2021. This annual survey identifies which schools are best preparing students for professional practice and which are most admired.

The School of Architecture invites you to join us for our 2021 Virtual Diploma Ceremony on Saturday 22 May beginning at 3:00pm EDT. This year’s event features undergraduate student speaker Alyssa Mayorga, B.Arch and graduate student speaker Afshan Rehman, MSSD. SoA faculty will read the names of our graduates and announce the winners of our 2021 Graduation Awards.

BOTH / AND: 2021 ASOS Thesis Show, Symposium, and Pop-Up Exhibition May 14-15

The 2021 ASOS Thesis Show embraces dizzying multiplicities, divergent interests, and engaging ambiguity. This digital exhibition presents the widely varied work of B.Arch, M.Arch, MUD, and MAAD students under one collective statement: BOTH / AND. The final reviews take place on Fri 14 May. The 2021 thesis events will culminate in an in-person, on-campus pop-up show the evening of Sat 15 May.

Commencement Weekend is May 22-23, 2021

CMU will host two live commencement ceremonies – one on Sat 22 May for master's and doctoral degree candidates, and one on Sun 23 May for bachelor’s degree candidates. Graduating students have the option to participate virtually or in person. The School of Architecture will host a virtual Diploma Ceremony on Sat 22 May. Congratulations to the Class of 2021!

RCI Working to Address First Mile/Last Mile and Micromobility Challenges Outside the Urban Core

The Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) and Traffic21 CMU faculty are working with communities in Allegheny County to address first mile/last mile and micromobility challenges that exist outside of the urban core. The Linking our Networked Communities (LINC) project is underway in partnership with the Quaker Valley Coalition of Governments (QVCOG) and the communities of Bellevue, Avalon, Ben Avon, Emsworth, and Kilbuck. The study, supported by a challenge grant from CMU’s Traffic21 and the Mobilty21 Urban Transportation Center, focuses on critical issues for mobility and urban design for towns beyond the urban core in the Southwestern Pennsylvania region.

Sarosh Anklesaria Writes on Recent Campaign Against Demolition of IIM Buildings by Louis Kahn

Professor Sarosh Anklesaria coauthored an article in Scroll.in, one of India's most widely circulated English news magazines, with Shubhra Raje and Riyaz Tayyibji. The authors reflect on a recent campaign to stop the demolition of dormitory buildings at IIM, Ahmedabad designed by Louis Kahn. The article calls for an ethic of empathy, care, and maintenance in the context of aging modernisms.

Sarosh Anklesaria's Work Featured in Strelka Magazine

Professor Sarosh Anklesaria recently published a longform essay in Strelka Magazine, titled “Cooking New Worlds: From Machinic Architectures to Biome Ecologies.” His work disentangles the machinic architectures of planetary food production, and points to other ways of worldbuilding, by introducing the Urban Symbiome—a proposed vision for a future based on an ethic of kinship, degrowth, and circular thinking.

Group Exhibition "Human Scale Remeasured" Features Work of Stefan Gruber’s Spring 2020 Cooperative Housing Studio

Associate Professor Stefan Gruber has initiated an international cooperation between five schools of architecture that investigates Cooperative Housing for the 2000-Watt Society. They explore how to address the intertwined issues of affordable housing and resource scarcity against the backdrop of ecological, economic, and political crisis and design for more equitable, collaborative, and resilient communities. “Human Scale Remeasured” is currently on show at the Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin through 13 May 2021.

CMU Team Earns Honorable Mention in 2021 ULI Hines Student Competition

A CMU team including SoA students Colleen Duong (B.Arch ‘21), Sean O'Connor (M.Arch ‘21), and Zhecui Zhang (M.Arch ‘21) received Honorable Mention in the 2021 Urban Land Institute (ULI) Hines Student Competition. The team was advised by SoA faculty Valentina Vavasis and Jonathan Kline. Their entry “The KC Knot” envisions Kansas City’s East Village as an area that embraces socioeconomic and racial diversity, encourages sustainable transportation, and supports equitable job growth and innovation.

2021 SoA Awards Program Applications due Tue 30 Mar at 5pm ET

The School of Architecture is now accepting applications for the 2021 SoA Awards Program. Awards are available for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as two faculty awards. More information about the awards and links to the applications are available on the SoA Awards page. Applications are due on Tuesday, 30 March 2021 at 5:00pm EST.

Professor Dana Cupkova Blends Research and Practice with EPIPHYTE Lab

For Associate Professor Dana Cupkova, pushing boundaries is nothing new. She works continuously to develop novel models for integrating her teaching with research. This approach is exemplified in her work at EPIPHYTE Lab, an architecture design and research platform situated at the intersection of academia and practice.

PhD-AECM Candidate Bobuchi Ken-Opurum Wins EDF Business Case Award

The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) awarded PhD-AECM candidate Bobuchi Ken-Opurum the Business Case Award on Wednesday 14 October for her Climate Corps Fellowship at the NYC Mayor’s Office of Resiliency over this past summer, where she developed a GIS integrated Cost-Benefit Analysis Decision Support tool. This award recognizes the fellow who has presented the strongest case for a project recommendation, backed by sound quantitative analysis and with a high likelihood of implementation.

Announcing the David Lewis Community Engagement Design Scholarship

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture is proud to announce the establishment of the David Lewis Community Engagement Design Scholarship in memory of David Lewis, Distinguished Teaching Professor of Urban Studies at Carnegie Mellon. This award is open to SoA students who work within diverse communities through participatory architectural design processes and demonstrate commitments to social justice and community service. The School of Architecture will announce the call for applications for the first award cycle in the spring of 2021.

Freedom By Design Chapter Awarded 2020 NOMA-NAACP-SEED Award for Design Excellence in Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The Carnegie Mellon Freedom By Design chapter has been awarded a 2020 NOMA-NAACP-SEED Award for Design Excellence in Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for the Weatherization Kit Project. The project aims to address housing inequalities by providing information and materials to help Pittsburgh families save money and energy in the winter months.
