Associate Professor Daniel Cardoso Llach lectured at the Fall 2019 Science, Technology, and Society Speaker Series at the University of Michigan’s STS Department, co-hosted by the Department of Architecture, on 4 November 2019. In the talk, Prof. Cardoso Llach discussed ways to put socio-technical perspectives at the center of computational design research and learning.

Rami, Chris, and Michael Kubo are co-authors of the recently published Imagining the Modern: Architecture and Urbanism of the Pittsburgh Renaissance. Daniel Cardoso Llach is the lead curator of Vers un imaginaire numérique, a new exhibition examining the nexus of architecture, design, and computation in North America. The show will take place in the Centre de design de l’UQAM in Montreal in the fall of 2021, supported by a prestigious $50,000 CAD Connections Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

Community Forge Playscape Wins ULI Pittsburgh’s 2019 Placemaking Award for Community Place
The “Acupuncture for Community Forge” playscape won ULI Pittsburgh’s 2019 Placemaking Award in the category of Community Places at the 7th Annual Placemaking Awards for Excellence ceremony on Friday 18 October. In Spring 2019, the Urban Collaboratory Studio led by Professor Gruber worked with Community Forge, a citizen-led initiative that is transforming a former vacant school in Wilkinsburg into a community center.
Architect Luis Vidal to Speak at Fall Lecture Series Mon 28 Oct
Architect Luis Vidal joins the 2019 Fall Lecture Series on Monday 28 October at 5:00pm for his talk “Zoom Perspectives.” Vidal established luis vidal + architects in 2004 and specializes in airport design. He has completed over 30 such designs, and is currently working on the design of the New Terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport in association with Gensler and HDR.

Landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson joins the 2019 Fall Lecture Series on Monday 21 October at 5:00pm for her talk “Designing in Paris, Valencia, Hong Kong & Hazelwood.” Gustafson is founding principal of Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (GGN) in Seattle and Gustafson Porter+Bowman (GP+B) in London. Her recent projects include the landscape design of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in DC and the public plaza of Hazelwood Green in Pittsburgh.

Vivian Loftness Appointed to Two National Boards for 2020
University Professor Vivian Loftness, the Paul Mellon Chair in the School of Architecture, has been appointed to two national boards for 2020. She was named to the American Institute of Architects National Board by AIA 2020 President Jane Frederick, and to the International Living Futures Institute (ILFI) Board by CEO Amanda Sturgeon.
