Carolyn Ristau Awarded 2022 Kathy A. Possinger Housing Policy Fellowship

The Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency has named Carolyn Ristau, Remaking Cities Institute Visiting Scholar, as its inaugural Kathy A. Possinger Housing Policy Fellowship awardee. Ristau will receive a financial stipend of up to $12,000 to support her research project "Residential Zoning by Race: How Pittsburgh's Zoning Districts Promote Different Housing Options for Black and White Residents."

Applications Open for 2022-23 Visiting Professorships

We invite applications for the 2022-23 Ann Kalla Professorship in Architecture and the Joseph F. Thomas Visiting Professorship. We welcome early to mid-career practitioners, scholars and studio educators with focused research and/or creative work interested in teaching. If your creative work is breaking new ground, you will find an encouraging, stimulating environment to support your explorations. Applications due on Monday, February 14, 2022 at 11:59pm ET. Employment begins in August 2022.

Exhibition "Vers un imaginaire numérique" opens Wed 15 Sep

The new exhibition Vers un imaginaire numérique curated by SoA Associate Professor Daniel Cardoso Llach in collaboration with McGill Assistant Professor Theodora Vardouli opens 15 September 2021 at the Centre de design de l’UQAM in Montréal, Canada. The exhibition explores the emergence of new methods for design representation, simulation, and manufacturing linked to digital computers’ capacities for information processing and display, and reflects on its contemporary repercussions across architecture, art, and design.

Carolyn Ristau Joins RCI as Visiting Scholar

The Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) is pleased to announce that Carolyn Ristau has joined the RCI as a Visiting Scholar. Ristau has over a decade of experience practicing and researching urban issues, including zoning, housing, transportation, and public safety. Her research seeks to understand the origins and context of zoning and development regulations to find ways that these regulations could be used to support more inclusive communities.

Ray Gastil to Speak at “Post-Covid Cities: Framework for Opportunity”

Remaking Cities Institute director Ray Gastil will speak on a panel on Wed 08 Sep from 12:00-2:00pm on "Post-Covid Cities: Framework for Opportunity.” The panel, which includes the leadership of the New York New Visions coalition of architects, designers, planners, and related disciplines responding to 9/11, will look back to the lessons learned from that work, and discuss the meaning and value of those to the current urban challenge.

EX-CHANGE 2021 Catalog & Exhibition Launches Thu 09 Sep

The 2021 EX-CHANGE celebrates the 2020-21 work of the SoA from first year to PhD through a custom video game, exhibition, and catalog designed by Leah Wulfman (B.Arch '16) and Studio Elana Schlenker. The annual exhibition of student work will be on view on campus from September 9-October 7, 2021 and features live (and live-streamed) events.

Announcing the New Curator of Public Programs

The SoA is pleased to announce Sarah Rafson as our Curator of Public Programs. In this new role, Sarah will be tasked with organizing our annual public programs, including our lectures and exhibitions, in collaboration with a school committee composed of faculty, staff, and students. She will also continue to edit EX-CHANGE, the school’s annual publication of student work, and organize its exhibitions.

Announcing Track Chair Updates for the M.Arch and AECM Programs

The SoA is pleased to announce that effective July 1, 2021 Sarosh Anklesaria will serve as the Track Chair of the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program and Joshua D. The SoA is proud to co-present the 2021 Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop (ACAW2021) along with our partners at Boston Valley Terra Cotta and the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning on Thursday 19 August from 9:00am-4:30pm. Join us as teams from around the world consisting of industry experts and students alike showcase terra cotta designs that push the limits of what is possible with clay.

UDream's Pittsburgh Case and Neighborhood Engagement

The Pittsburgh Case & Neighborhood Engagement was a 90 minute workshop during which a brief overview of the UDream program’s impact on Pittsburgh’s environment was given followed by a discussion on alternative methods; efforts to support a more sustainable DEI system; ongoing work to support aspiring K-12 architects; undergraduate and graduate student retention; and architectural leadership in the community.
