School of Architecture Ranked #11 in DesignIntelligence Survey

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture’s B.Arch program is ranked #11 overall in the 2019-20 DesignIntelligence Survey of Architecture Schools, and placed top-ten in 9 of 12 focus areas. For schools with 20-49 graduates, the SoA ranked #9 overall in most hired from architecture schools. Professor & Head Stephen Lee was again named one of the Most Admired Educators in Architecture this year.

Don Carter to Speak at Transportation Engineering and Safety Conference at Penn State on Wed 11 Dec

Don Carter, Senior Research Fellow at the Remaking Cities Institute, will speak at the Engineering and Safety Conference (TESC) at Penn State on Wednesday 11 December. The subject of his talk is “Smart Cities & The Built Environment.” TESC is an annual gathering that brings together professionals from throughout Pennsylvania, the mid-Atlantic region, and the country to discuss pressing issues from some of the foremost experts in transportation today.

Jeremy Ficca Co-Curated “Drawing Attention” Exhibition Reviewed in The RIBA Journal and The Architect’s Newspaper

Associate Professor Jeremy Ficca co-curated the exhibition Drawing Attention: The Digital Culture of Contemporary Architectural Drawings at the Roca London Gallery. The exhibition, which examines the state of contemporary architectural drawing, was recently reviewed by The Architect’s Newspaper and The RIBA Journal.

Dan Martin to Step Down as Dean of CMU’s College of Fine Arts

Dan Martin has decided to step down as dean of CMU’s College of Fine Arts (CFA), and will return to the faculty in the School of Drama. A national search to find Martin’s successor will be announced later this fall, with the goal of naming the new dean by fall of 2020. Martin will serve in his current role until a new dean is named.

This talk asks many questions, including: What impact can commoning have on the bottom-up transformation of cities? And what agency do designers have in contributing to such commons transition?

Kristen Kurland Delivers GIS Keynotes from Harrisburg to Africa

Professor Kristen Kurland delivers two GIS keynote talks this month. On November 21, in Kigali Rwanda, Kurland will deliver a talk at Africa GIS 2019 describing recent 3D work with the Remaking Cities Institute and her Health GIS work. She also gave the keynote talk on November 13 (GIS Day) at the Central Pennsylvania GIS Day Conference in Harrisburg.

Ray Gastil Featured on Podcast A is for Anthropocene

Ray Gastil, Director of the Remaking Cities Institute, recently spoke on the podcast A is for Anthropocene, where he discussed sustainable cities and species that are no longer extinct. The podcast is produced by the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and discusses topics including cities, the future, the region, and research work being done at Carnegie Mellon University and the City of Pittsburgh.

School of Architecture Seeks Adjunct Faculty for Spring 2020

Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture is now accepting applications for 2020 adjunct faculty. The SoA has openings for Adjunct Studio Faculty in both the Core 6 and Advanced Synthesis Options (ASO) studios, and for Upper Level / Graduate Course Adjunct Faculty to teach courses including Value Based Design and Project Planning and Reporting.

Dana Cupkova Invited to Serve as a Scientific Chair for Symposium on Simulation for Architecture and Urban Design Vienna 2020

Associate Professor Dana Cupkova was invited to serve as a scientific chair for the 2020 SimAUD Conference. SimAUD2020 will be held at TU Wien in Austria May 25-27, 2020. The call for submissions is now open; the paper deadline is 22 December 2019.

SoA Faculty & Students Help Make 47th Annual NOMA National Convention in Brooklyn a Success

Professor Erica Cochran Hameen Co-Chaired this year’s National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Conference and Exposition in Brooklyn, which had the largest attendance in NOMA history. SoA students also participated in the 2019 Barbara G. Laurie Student Design Competition as part of the event.

Applications Now Open for the 2019-20 Visiting Professorships

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture is now accepting applications for the Ann Kalla Professorship in Architecture, and new this year, the Joseph F. Thomas Visiting Professorship. The SoA seeks individuals with a strong background, or emerging potential, in creative architectural accomplishment that elevates the discipline through research work, scholarly work, artistic work, and/or professional practice. Applications due Monday, 13 January 2020 at 11:59pm EST.

Daniel Cardoso Llach lectures at the University of Michigan

Associate Professor Daniel Cardoso Llach lectured at the Fall 2019 Science, Technology, and Society Speaker Series at the University of Michigan’s STS Department, co-hosted by the Department of Architecture, on 4 November 2019. In the talk, Prof. Cardoso Llach discussed ways to put socio-technical perspectives at the center of computational design research and learning.

SoA Faculty and Alumni Participate in SAY IT LOUD Pennsylvania Exhibition Opening Fri 01 Nov

Erica Cochran Hameen, PhD and Bill Bates, FAIA, together with alumni Ernest Bellamy and Chase Kea and nine UDream Alumni, will participate in SAY IT LOUD Pennsylvania, Representation Matters: Changing the Face of Architecture. The exhibit will run through the month of November and showcases the work of minority architects and designers. The opening reception is Friday 01 November from 6:00-10:00pm at GBBN Architects.

Daniel Cardoso Llach curates Vers un imaginaire numérique exhibition in Montreal

Daniel Cardoso Llach is the lead curator of Vers un imaginaire numérique, a new exhibition examining the nexus of architecture, design, and computation in North America. The show will take place in the Centre de design de l’UQAM in Montreal in the fall of 2021, supported by a prestigious $50,000 CAD Connections Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

Community Forge Playscape Wins ULI Pittsburgh’s 2019 Placemaking Award for Community Place

The “Acupuncture for Community Forge” playscape won ULI Pittsburgh’s 2019 Placemaking Award in the category of Community Places at the 7th Annual Placemaking Awards for Excellence ceremony on Friday 18 October. In Spring 2019, the Urban Collaboratory Studio led by Professor Gruber worked with Community Forge, a citizen-led initiative that is transforming a former vacant school in Wilkinsburg into a community center.

Vivian Loftness Appointed to Two National Boards for 2020

University Professor Vivian Loftness, the Paul Mellon Chair in the School of Architecture, has been appointed to two national boards for 2020. She was named to the American Institute of Architects National Board by AIA 2020 President Jane Frederick, and to the International Living Futures Institute (ILFI) Board by CEO Amanda Sturgeon.
