The studio, under the leadership of Steve Lee in collaboration with Liza Cruze, considered the porch as the critical element of architecture mediating the realm between the building and the surrounding spaces at Community Forge in Wilkinsburg.

Lipika Swarup to Present Doctoral Thesis Proposal Wed 11 Dec at 12pm

Lipika Swarup will present the proposal for the thesis, “Exploring the role of project priority on the application of project delivery practices in a group of multiple projects,” as a candidate of the PhD of Architecture–Engineering–Construction Management on Wednesday 11 December at 12:00pm. B.Arch Student Monica Toren Competes on Winning Team in Amusement Park Contest

Fifth-year B.Arch student Monica Toren was part of a winning interdisciplinary team from CMU that competed at the Ryerson Invitational Thrill Design Competition in November. Toren will begin a hotel design internship with Disney World’s Facility Asset Management Team in Florida next year after graduating from the School of Architecture later this month.

School of Architecture Ranked #11 in DesignIntelligence Survey

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture’s B.Arch program is ranked #11 overall in the 2019-20 DesignIntelligence Survey of Architecture Schools, and placed top-ten in 9 of 12 focus areas. For schools with 20-49 graduates, the SoA ranked #9 overall in most hired from architecture schools. Professor & Head Stephen Lee was again named one of the Most Admired Educators in Architecture this year.

MSSD Synthesis Research Projects Final Review is Thu 12 Dec

The Master of Science in Sustainable Design (MSSD) program led by Dana Cupkova invites you to the final review of the Synthesis Research Projects on Thursday 12 December from 10:00am-2:00pm in CFA 206B and CFA 211. The reviews are a culmination of an MSSD program that focuses on integration and advancement of design and research strategies for the built environment across scales and beyond standard sustainable approaches.

PhD Student Jinmo Rhee Awarded Two Prizes at Architectural Design Conference hosted by Korea’s Architectural Institute

Doctoral student Jinmo Rhee (MSCD ’19, PhD ’23) was awarded two prizes at this year’s Architectural Design Conference hosted by Korea’s Architectural Institute. Jinmo’s MSCD thesis was selected for a special exhibition after winning a juried competition. Additionally, Rhee’s research won the Best Paper Prize in the same conference.

SoA Faculty & Students Help Make 47th Annual NOMA National Convention in Brooklyn a Success

Professor Erica Cochran Hameen Co-Chaired this year’s National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Conference and Exposition in Brooklyn, which had the largest attendance in NOMA history. SoA students also participated in the 2019 Barbara G. Laurie Student Design Competition as part of the event.

CMU Selects Freedom By Design Home Weatherization Kit Project for Annual Crowdfunding Campaign

Freedom by Design’s Weatherization Kits are one of 12 projects featured in the annual CMU Crowdfunding Campaign. Each year, CMU highlights student projects that promote hands-on learning and impact the local community. Donations are being accepted now through December 3, 2019 at 11:59pm EST.

NOW. wats:ON? Festival 2019 is November 7-9

November 7-9, the 2019 wats:ON? Festival invites us to explore art as activism. NOW. takes on the spirit of activism, with artists and work tapping into the zeitgeist of our current climate to redirect culture. The artists use light, music, sound, architecture, art, spoken word, and performance to evoke deep social and political questions.

Community Forge Playscape Wins ULI Pittsburgh’s 2019 Placemaking Award for Community Place

The “Acupuncture for Community Forge” playscape won ULI Pittsburgh’s 2019 Placemaking Award in the category of Community Places at the 7th Annual Placemaking Awards for Excellence ceremony on Friday 18 October. In Spring 2019, the Urban Collaboratory Studio led by Professor Gruber worked with Community Forge, a citizen-led initiative that is transforming a former vacant school in Wilkinsburg into a community center.
