CMU will offer a new interdisciplinary course this upcoming fall semester in collaboration with the wats:ON Festival. wats:ON 2019: NOW. takes on the spirit of Activism, with artists and work tapping into the zeitgeist of our current climate to redirect culture. Students will work directly with festival artists towards the production of original work to premiere at the November festival.

UDBS to Present as Finalist at Department of Energy 2019 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge
The Urban Design Build Studio (UDBS) will present as a finalist at the Department of Energy’s 2019 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge on Saturday 13 April at 4:30pm EDT in a livestreamed event. The studio is presenting the urban infill housing prototypes RE_CON 01 and RE_CON 02 developed by students that will be constructed in East Liberty.

Associate Professor of Architecture Daniel Cardoso Llach participated in the symposium “Other Histories of the Digital” at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design this past week. He discussed aspects of digital labor in architecture based on his ongoing research on the history and contemporary practices of computer-aided design and building information modeling.

Associate professor Dana Cupkova presented her design and research work at the 2019 Living Architecture Systems Group Symposium (LASG), and contributed to the 2019 LASG White Paper book with a paper co-authored by SoA assistant teaching professor Daragh Byrne titled Towards Psychosomatic Architecture: Attuning Reactive Architectural Materials Through Biofeedback.

Associate professor Joshua Bard and assistant professor Dana Cupkova recently published an article entitled “Robotic concrete surface finishing: A Moldless approach to creating thermally tuned surface geometry for architectural building components using Profile-3D-Printing” in the Construction Robotics Journal. SoA Alumnus Ben Saks to Debut Documentary FLOAT at Cleveland International Film Festival
SoA alumnus Ben Saks co-wrote and co-produced the documentary FLOAT, which is to World Premiere at the 43rd edition of the Cleveland International Film Festival April 5-6, 2019. FLOAT explores the ultra-competitive sport of elite, stunningly-designed indoor model airplanes, as a wild-card newcomer threatens to knock a teammate off his world champion throne.
