Professor Kristen Kurland delivers two GIS keynote talks this month. On November 21, in Kigali Rwanda, Kurland will deliver a talk at Africa GIS 2019 describing recent 3D work with the Remaking Cities Institute and her Health GIS work. She also gave the keynote talk on November 13 (GIS Day) at the Central Pennsylvania GIS Day Conference in Harrisburg.

Ray Gastil, Director of the Remaking Cities Institute, recently spoke on the podcast A is for Anthropocene, where he discussed sustainable cities and species that are no longer extinct. The podcast is produced by the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and discusses topics including cities, the future, the region, and research work being done at Carnegie Mellon University and the City of Pittsburgh.

PhD Student Jinmo Rhee Awarded Two Prizes at Architectural Design Conference hosted by Korea’s Architectural Institute
Doctoral student Jinmo Rhee (MSCD ’19, PhD ’23) was awarded two prizes at this year’s Architectural Design Conference hosted by Korea’s Architectural Institute. Jinmo’s MSCD thesis was selected for a special exhibition after winning a juried competition. Additionally, Rhee’s research won the Best Paper Prize in the same conference.
SoA Faculty & Students Help Make 47th Annual NOMA National Convention in Brooklyn a Success
Professor Erica Cochran Hameen Co-Chaired this year’s National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Conference and Exposition in Brooklyn, which had the largest attendance in NOMA history. SoA students also participated in the 2019 Barbara G. Laurie Student Design Competition as part of the event.

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture is now accepting applications for the Ann Kalla Professorship in Architecture, and new this year, the Joseph F. Thomas Visiting Professorship. The SoA seeks individuals with a strong background, or emerging potential, in creative architectural accomplishment that elevates the discipline through research work, scholarly work, artistic work, and/or professional practice. Associate Professor Daniel Cardoso Llach lectured at the Fall 2019 Science, Technology, and Society Speaker Series at the University of Michigan’s STS Department, co-hosted by the Department of Architecture, on 4 November 2019. In the talk, Prof. Cardoso Llach discussed ways to put socio-technical perspectives at the center of computational design research and learning.

Rami el Samahy and Chris Grimley join the 2019 Fall Lecture Series on Monday 11 November at 5:00pm for their talk “Imagining the Modern.” The pair are founding principals of OverUnder, an architecture and design studio. Rami, Chris, and Michael Kubo are co-authors of the recently published Imagining the Modern: Architecture and Urbanism of the Pittsburgh Renaissance. Copies of the book will be on sale during the event.
