Dan Martin to Step Down as Dean of CMU’s College of Fine Arts
Dan Martin has decided to step down as dean of CMU’s College of Fine Arts (CFA), and will return to the faculty in the School of Drama. A national search to find Martin’s successor will be announced later this fall, with the goal of naming the new dean by fall of 2020. Martin will serve in his current role until a new dean is named.

Kristen Kurland Delivers GIS Keynotes from Harrisburg to Africa
Professor Kristen Kurland delivers two GIS keynote talks this month. On November 21, in Kigali Rwanda, Kurland will deliver a talk at Africa GIS 2019 describing recent 3D work with the Remaking Cities Institute and her Health GIS work. She also gave the keynote talk on November 13 (GIS Day) at the Central Pennsylvania GIS Day Conference in Harrisburg.

Ray Gastil, Director of the Remaking Cities Institute, recently spoke on the podcast A is for Anthropocene, where he discussed sustainable cities and species that are no longer extinct. The podcast is produced by the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and discusses topics including cities, the future, the region, and research work being done at Carnegie Mellon University and the City of Pittsburgh.

PhD Student Jinmo Rhee Awarded Two Prizes at Architectural Design Conference hosted by Korea’s Architectural Institute
Doctoral student Jinmo Rhee (MSCD ’19, PhD ’23) was awarded two prizes at this year’s Architectural Design Conference hosted by Korea’s Architectural Institute. Jinmo’s MSCD thesis was selected for a special exhibition after winning a juried competition. Additionally, Rhee’s research won the Best Paper Prize in the same conference.
SoA Faculty & Students Help Make 47th Annual NOMA National Convention in Brooklyn a Success
Professor Erica Cochran Hameen Co-Chaired this year’s National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Conference and Exposition in Brooklyn, which had the largest attendance in NOMA history. SoA students also participated in the 2019 Barbara G. Laurie Student Design Competition as part of the event.
