Freedom By Design Chapter Awarded 2020 NOMA-NAACP-SEED Award for Design Excellence in Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The Carnegie Mellon Freedom By Design chapter has been awarded a 2020 NOMA-NAACP-SEED Award for Design Excellence in Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for the Weatherization Kit Project. The project aims to address housing inequalities by providing information and materials to help Pittsburgh families save money and energy in the winter months.

The 2020 edition of EX-CHANGE, the SoA’s annual exhibition, publication, and series of events celebrating the work of the school from first year through PhD, launches Fri 04 Sep, with events running through Sun 13 Sep. The first ever online EX-CHANGE exhibition launches at exchange.soa.cmu.edu Fri 04 Sep at 5pm EST, set to music by DJ HUNY for the first 24 hours. Additional virtual events take place September 04-13 organized by AIAS, NOMAS, and inter·punct.

Sarosh Anklesaria Joins Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture as T. David Fitz-Gibbon Professor of Architecture

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture is pleased to welcome Sarosh Anklesaria as the T. David Fitz-Gibbon Professor of Architecture. Anklesaria is an architect and educator interested in an expansive notion of architectural agency, one that synthesizes architecture’s formal and tectonic capacities with questions of socio-ecological pertinence, across various scales and geographies.

Laura Garófalo Appointed Associate Professor in the Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture is pleased to announce the appointment of Laura Garófalo to the position of Associate Professor. In this role, she will teach graduate and undergraduate studios and seminars focused on material production and ecologically centered design. Her research, pedagogy, and practice focuses on the conjunction of natural and architectural systems.

Announcing the Revised List of Speakers for the Fall 2020 CMU School of Architecture Lecture Series

The Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture is pleased to announce this revised list of guest speakers for the 2020 Fall Lecture Series. The Fall Lecture Series will focus attention on architecture and activism, and the role that architecture can have towards social equity and spatial justice. Due to the current global health crisis and university policy, the Fall 2020 Lecture Series will be held in a virtual format for all visits.

M.Arch Program Receives Initial Accreditation from NAAB

CMU’s Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program has been granted Initial Accreditation from the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The accreditation is effective January 1, 2019, which means that past degrees awarded by the SoA, including the inaugural M.Arch graduating class of 2019, are considered accredited.

Art Installation at the Home of Matthew Plecity Brings Joy During Pandemic

The family of adjunct faculty member Matthew Plecity made the news in a feature on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s website. His wife Natalie, a landscape architect, and their children transformed the front yard of their Squirrel Hill home into a public art installation using survey flagging tape. At a time when people are feeling “bound” in their homes, these installations are a way to bring people together, while maintaining physical distancing.
