RCI’s Research on Resilient Industrial Regions Contributes to Transatlantic Dialogue

The Remaking Cities Institute’s research and programming on resilient industrial regions is continuing to contribute to a transatlantic dialogue on challenges and opportunities. RCI will be sustaining this dialogue in 2022, including programs with the Ruhr region which will be announced in early 2022.

Carolyn Ristau Awarded 2022 Kathy A. Possinger Housing Policy Fellowship

The Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency has named Carolyn Ristau, Remaking Cities Institute Visiting Scholar, as its inaugural Kathy A. Possinger Housing Policy Fellowship awardee. Ristau will receive a financial stipend of up to $12,000 to support her research project "Residential Zoning by Race: How Pittsburgh's Zoning Districts Promote Different Housing Options for Black and White Residents."

Applications Open for 2022-23 Visiting Professorships

We invite applications for the 2022-23 Ann Kalla Professorship in Architecture and the Joseph F. Thomas Visiting Professorship. We welcome early to mid-career practitioners, scholars and studio educators with focused research and/or creative work interested in teaching. If your creative work is breaking new ground, you will find an encouraging, stimulating environment to support your explorations. Applications due on Monday, February 14, 2022 at 11:59pm ET. Employment begins in August 2022.

Exhibition "Vers un imaginaire numérique" opens Wed 15 Sep

The new exhibition Vers un imaginaire numérique curated by SoA Associate Professor Daniel Cardoso Llach in collaboration with McGill Assistant Professor Theodora Vardouli opens 15 September 2021 at the Centre de design de l’UQAM in Montréal, Canada. The exhibition explores the emergence of new methods for design representation, simulation, and manufacturing linked to digital computers’ capacities for information processing and display, and reflects on its contemporary repercussions across architecture, art, and design.

Carolyn Ristau Joins RCI as Visiting Scholar

The Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) is pleased to announce that Carolyn Ristau has joined the RCI as a Visiting Scholar. Ristau has over a decade of experience practicing and researching urban issues, including zoning, housing, transportation, and public safety. Her research seeks to understand the origins and context of zoning and development regulations to find ways that these regulations could be used to support more inclusive communities.

Ray Gastil to Speak at “Post-Covid Cities: Framework for Opportunity”

Remaking Cities Institute director Ray Gastil will speak on a panel on Wed 08 Sep from 12:00-2:00pm on "Post-Covid Cities: Framework for Opportunity.” The panel, which includes the leadership of the New York New Visions coalition of architects, designers, planners, and related disciplines responding to 9/11, will look back to the lessons learned from that work, and discuss the meaning and value of those to the current urban challenge.

Announcing the New Curator of Public Programs

The SoA is pleased to announce Sarah Rafson as our Curator of Public Programs. In this new role, Sarah will be tasked with organizing our annual public programs, including our lectures and exhibitions, in collaboration with a school committee composed of faculty, staff, and students. She will also continue to edit EX-CHANGE, the school’s annual publication of student work, and organize its exhibitions.

Announcing Track Chair Updates for the M.Arch and AECM Programs

The SoA is pleased to announce that effective July 1, 2021 Sarosh Anklesaria will serve as the Track Chair of the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program and Joshua D. Lee will serve as the Track Chair of the Master of Science and PhD in Architecture–Engineering–Construction Management (AECM) programs.

The SoA is proud to co-present the 2021 Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop (ACAW2021) along with our partners at Boston Valley Terra Cotta and the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning on Thursday 19 August from 9:00am-4:30pm. Join us as teams from around the world consisting of industry experts and students alike showcase terra cotta designs that push the limits of what is possible with clay.

Announcing the 2021 Joseph F. Thomas and Ann Kalla Visiting Professors

The School of Architecture is pleased to announce the 2021 Joseph F. Thomas Visiting Professor, Jackie Joseph Paul McFarland, and the 2021 Ann Kalla Visiting Professor, Tommy CheeMou Yang. Professors McFarland and Yang will be joining us from Chicago and New York respectively. This fall, they will be offering seminars aligned with their research and teaching in our first and second year studios. In the spring, they will be offering Options studios.

Opening Up: Beyond the Porch, a lecture by Ray Gastil, Director of the Remaking Cities Institute, will be presented as part of the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation series on Thursday 20 May from 6:00-8:00pm on Zoom. As we reopen our business districts and neighborhoods, yet at the same time design for a new normal, the places where the private realm opens up to the public are more important than ever.

Announcing the Associate Heads and the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) at the School of Architecture

The School of Architecture is pleased to announce our new Associate Heads and Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI): Professor Mary-Lou Arscott, Associate Head for Design Fundamentals; Professor Joshua Bard, Associate Head for Design Research; Professor Kai Gutschow, Associate Head for Design Ethics; and Professor Erica Cochran Hameen, Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). The new positions are effective July 1, 2021.

RCI Working to Address First Mile/Last Mile and Micromobility Challenges Outside the Urban Core

The Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) and Traffic21 CMU faculty are working with communities in Allegheny County to address first mile/last mile and micromobility challenges that exist outside of the urban core. The Linking our Networked Communities (LINC) project is underway in partnership with the Quaker Valley Coalition of Governments (QVCOG) and the communities of Bellevue, Avalon, Ben Avon, Emsworth, and Kilbuck. The study, supported by a challenge grant from CMU’s Traffic21 and the Mobilty21 Urban Transportation Center, focuses on critical issues for mobility and urban design for towns beyond the urban core in the Southwestern Pennsylvania region.
