B.Arch Fifth Year Zain Islam-Hashmi Has Designs for Fashion

As head designer for CMU's annual Lunar Gala fashion show, Zain Islam-Hashmi has created his niche as an architect of fashion, who creates clothing and wardrobe ensembles with materials like resin, cement, and plexiglass. He has taken advantage of opportunities at CMU and around the world and has shaped them into something unique.

SoA to Host “Drawing for the Design Imaginary” Exhibition March 23-30 during 107th ACSA Annual Meeting

In conjunction with the 107th ACSA Annual Meeting taking place in Pittsburgh from 28-30 March 2019, the exhibit Drawing for the Design Imaginary will be on display in the CFA Great Hall from March 23-30. It will then move to the Carnegie Museum of Art, Music Hall Foyer on Saturday, March 30 for the ACSA conference closing reception.

Don Carter and Christine Mondor to Speak at Pittsburgh’s 10th Annual Sustainability Conference March 6

SoA faculty Don Carter and Christine Mondor will speak at the 10th Annual Sustainability Conference – “Smart Cities: Transforming Cities for a New Era” in Pittsburgh on March 6. Carter will deliver the keynote, titled “Smart Cities: A Global Perspective.”

CMU SoA is Host University for ACSA Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh March 28-30

Associate Professor Jeremy Ficca is co-chair of this year’s ACSA Annual Meeting taking place in Pittsburgh March 28-30, 2019. The event, titled Black Box: Articulating Architecture’s Core in the Post-Digital Era, will be hosted in conjunction with the SoA Spring Lecture Series and CRIT Live: AIAS Research Symposia.

BA Student Emily deGrandpre Presents App at Global Grad Show in Dubai

Emily deGrandpre (BA ’19) and School of Design alumni Joseph Kim and Tina Park developed the app Amica to help the partners of recently internationally relocated workers to connect with people and experiences in their new community. Emily traveled to the Global Grad Show in Dubai this past November to present the project on behalf of the team.

SoA Faculty Stefani Danes and Doug Cooper Collaborate on Mural in New Tepper Building

Faculty members Doug Cooper and Stefani Danes recently unveiled their collaborative mural installation in the new Tepper Building entitled “The Collaborative Campus.” Partners in life and project collaborators, the pair pooled their talent in drawn imagery and fabric piecework to create a cohesive depiction of cross-campus collaboration and innovation at CMU.

Applications for Anderson Award for Graduate Students due Mon 18 Feb

The George W. Anderson, Jr. Award recognizes SoA graduate students who demonstrate through a completed project an exceptional level of attention to detail and dedication to beneficially impacting the community. The 1st place award totals $3,000 and the 2nd place award totals $2,000.

Registration Now Open for Spring K-12 Architectural Explorations Saturday Workshops

The workshops focus on skill building central to the architectural design process. The 8-week program is held on Saturdays beginning February 23 through May 4, 2019 from 9:30am-12:30pm on the CMU campus. Multiple child discounts and scholarships are available.
