Sarosh Anklesaria Joins Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture as T. David Fitz-Gibbon Professor of Architecture

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture is pleased to welcome Sarosh Anklesaria as the T. David Fitz-Gibbon Professor of Architecture. Anklesaria is an architect and educator interested in an expansive notion of architectural agency, one that synthesizes architecture’s formal and tectonic capacities with questions of socio-ecological pertinence, across various scales and geographies.

Laura Garófalo Appointed Associate Professor in the Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture

The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture is pleased to announce the appointment of Laura Garófalo to the position of Associate Professor. In this role, she will teach graduate and undergraduate studios and seminars focused on material production and ecologically centered design. Her research, pedagogy, and practice focuses on the conjunction of natural and architectural systems.

Art Installation at the Home of Matthew Plecity Brings Joy During Pandemic

The family of adjunct faculty member Matthew Plecity made the news in a feature on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s website. His wife Natalie, a landscape architect, and their children transformed the front yard of their Squirrel Hill home into a public art installation using survey flagging tape. At a time when people are feeling “bound” in their homes, these installations are a way to bring people together, while maintaining physical distancing.

Francesca Torello Presents at First Virtual Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians

Francesca Torello’s paper, "Experiencing Architecture: Augmented Reality from the Museum to the Classroom," is part of the "Digital Pedagogies" session, which examines the long-term consequences of the use of digital technologies in museums and architectural exhibitions, and their impact on the teaching of architectural history.

SoA Faculty Gerard Damiani and Andrew Moss Win Pittsburgh Magazine Best of Design Awards

The SoA congratulates faculty Gerard Damiani and Andrew Moss, whose firms won awards in Pittsburgh Magazine’s 2020 Best of Design. Damiani is design principal of Studio d’ARC, which won Best Renovated Kitchen for a spacious, Scandinavian-inspired space in a Fox Chapel home. mossArchitects won the award for Best Room for a two-story great room with a stunning view.

Vivian Loftness Appointed to The National Academies Committee for Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States

SoA professor Vivian Loftness, and professor Chris Hendrickson in the CMU Civil and Environmental Engineering department, have been appointed to The National Academies Committee for Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy and Societal Dimensions. The two-year committee is focused on the technologies and policies needed today for full decarbonization by 2050.

Professor Daniel Cardoso Llach presented progress on his “Experimental Archaeology of CAD Project” to students and faculty in the CMU History Department. The project examines the development of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems through a combination of historical, ethnographic, and creative technology prototyping methods.

Jeremy Ficca and Stefan Gruber Awarded ACSA 2020 Architectural Education Awards

The SoA congratulates Jeremy Ficca and Stefan Gruber for receiving 2020 Architectural Education Awards presented by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). Ficca was awarded in the Creative Achievement category for his course Fabricating Customization, and Gruber was awarded in the Collaborative Practice category for the project Urban Acupuncture for Community Forge.
