COMMUNITIES BY DESIGN Professor Lewis came to the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now CMU) in 1963 as the Andrew Mellon Professor of Architecture and Urban Design where he started one of the first graduate programs in urban design in which students learned to work hands-on with elected officials, agency representatives, and citizens on community design and development projects. Professor Lewis will discuss his concerns and hopes for the future of urban design education.

DAVID LEWIS, FAIA, RIBA, is Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Urban Design in the School of Architecture, Carnegie Mellon University. An architect and urban designer, Professor Lewis founded Urban Design Associates (UDA) in 1964, a pioneering and internationally recognized architecture and urban design firm. Professor Lewis is a Fellow of the AIA and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and has received several local, state and national awards, including the AIA Kemper Award for service to the profession and the Pennsylvania Gold Medal for Architecture. He also taught at Yale University as the William Henry Bishop Professor of Urban Design and was the Hyde Professor at the University of Nebraska. Professor Lewis is a painter and sculptor and has authored numerous books on art, architecture, and urban design.
