FULLNESS: THE ART OF THE WHOLE explores how beautiful design arises from the art and science of a deep, query-based research process, and includes many individuals and many (often competing) influences. Central among these influences is an ethical commitment to researching and visioning anew the ways in which architecture and planning can address some of the most pressing issues of our time: the international crisis of affordable shelter and the role that carbon consumption plays in global warming and the decimation of our physical environment. Using project examples from the past decade, Stephen Kieran will discuss the evolution of the firm’s creative process over time, the expanding role of communication in the work, and how innovative new modeling and analysis technologies can become tools for dialogue and collaboration.
STEVE KIERAN is a partner at KieranTimberlake, an award-winning architecture firm established in 1984 and a leader in practice-based architectural research and innovative buildings. Under his guidance, KieranTimberlake has received numerous design citations including the 2008 AIA Architecture Firm Award, and the 2010 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Architecture. Kieran has co-authored seven books on architecture, including the influential book Refabricating Architecture, and their newest monograph KieranTimberlake: Fullness. In addition to his architectural practice, Stephen has held professorships at University of Pennsylvania, University of Washington, Yale University, University of Michigan, and Princeton University.
