MASS Design Group founded by MICHAEL MURPHY in 2008, operates under the belief that buildings can heal individuals and communities. By using innovative design and an immersive research process, MASS looks at the contextual problems facing the specific communities it serves and produces design interventions that will provide dignity and improve health and economic outcomes. MASS promotes an expanded practice of architecture that is not solely about the delivery of a final object or building, but about process and effecting systemic change. In addition to leading the design and construction of the Butaro Hospital in Rwanda - awarded 2011 Acute Medical Building of the Year by Contract Magazine - Michael has been awarded 2011 Gamechanger by Metropolis Magazine, deemed one of Fast Company's Masters of Design for 2011, honored in the PopTech Fellows class of 2011 as a leader in technology innovation, and recently accepted Contract Magazine's Designer of the Year Award for 2012.
